Multimedia Producer – Blog series

Companies are taking advantage of Multimedia Producers. If you look around at job listings, companies hiring multimedia producers full time, are paying very little compared to the value of the skillset.  In addition to that, many other companies are trying to turn graphic designers into multimedia producers (or video producers, motion designers, “content creators” and seven-plate-at-a-a-time spinners. They want you to do it all, for $25-$35 an hour.

A recent job I had paid pretty well. It still wasn’t what it should be, but after seeing an average of $60,000-$75,000 annual salaries for the position, it was much better than the average.

Of course there are many different types of multimedia producers. In a news or journalism context, they may write,  film and edit their own segments, and post them online, with an interactive feedback feature. Boom! Now it’s multimedia.

To me, a multimedia producer is exactly what graphic designers don’t want to be exploited into. Someone who does design, motion graphics, video production, audio production, illustration, animation. Maybe even someone who cooks lunch–then they can do the food photoshoot too.

Seriously though, that stuff is all great, and that’s exactly what I do. I’ve built up the experience to do all of those things and I can create multimedia content anyway I like. But, that’s not really how I want to work.

I want to be a producer and hire amazing creatives to work with me. I should have a budget.

Now, even my young cousins with phones slash mini-computer-camera-machines, can be content creators and, if they like, they can call themselves multimedia producers.

So if you have a company and you need multimedia content, feel free to hire a multimedia producer, but make sure you are ready to give them a healthy, realistic budget to work with. Or maybe you can hire your own cousin to do it for you. It might not be effective, but you can call it multimedia if you like.
